Free ranging owners

1/2 acre - 20 ducks & 10 chickens (2 of which as Banties, I don't free range - they have a large pen instead). Then 3 chicks in the brooder.

If I had a photo of them truly scattered (which I do) you could hardly see them, they're so far spread around and blend in quite well (which is good, keeps the hawks away)

We only have six chickens, but own 108 acres of cliff-dissected forest. The birds are free to roam, but they stay on about 2 acres nearest the houses and coop. One RIR likes to follow me up to the garden (maybe 150 yards uphill)when I go, but the others stay behind.

We also have a couple dogs, one of which takes guarding her feathered buddies quite seriously. I lost one cockerel last spring and I suspect hawk or owl - our dog Vixey was very agitated, barking at the sky and angry when we came out to see what was up. Since then we have been lucky I guess.

Wish I had more partridge Marans. The one we have is nearly invisible and seems to know the best background for hiding her plumage - against rocks or tree bark.

I have 30 at present and they range on 1 acre of ground fenced on three sides by cattle fencing....so they bleed through the fences at times. Nothing but many acres of pasture on these fence lines.

Here are a few pics of my free ranged birds:

I love the sound of the ladies racing up the hill from the bottom of the lot when we open the gate, they make a line and run up the hill as fast as they can go. We have 12 on about 1/3 of an acre (actually less because the veggie garden is in the center of that)

Right now only 9 chickens who have easy access to about a cleared acre among 7ish acres, in which they tend to hang out in probably half of that accessible area with preferred spots being the front porch, under cars, or in the car ports. No fences here other than to keep chickens out of things. They don't stray far beyond sight of home, which is good, as our drive way goes on to a major 4 lane the highway that has rush hour traffic that is so bad, that not even the lights at the 5 way intersections north and south is enough to give you a gap to get onto the road. Thanks to all the nice drivers that let you in.

I have one fenced acre and have had up to 20 chickens. Pickens must be good closer to their coop cause they rarely go out in the pasture, they stay by the house/barn/irrigation ditch.

16 chickens and I don't know how many chicks, but there sure are plenty of them. They all free range on a quarter of an acre, although now that our rain season is over, they will be getting penned up for the next five months of so or else our place will resemble the Sahara desert

Less than 200. We have 4 acres ... They are never all out at the same time. We have several pens, and they take turns.

Free ranging meaties who really didn't go far ....
