wow a couple HUGE eggs!@Nabiki Also, today I got a 7g egg compared to three 14g eggs, is that normal for new layers, like with chickens? Yesterday they laid five 13-14g eggs.

If you're talking about japanese, you can free range, but under certain conditions.
I have several japs but only free range two. These two are really tame and I know they won't fly away. I also keep a very close eye on them all the time and will grab them if there is any possible sign of danger.
These two are my tamest quails and don't mind being held.
I don't recommend just letting them out to run around and I certainly wouldn't do it if I wasn't very familiar with them and know they're really tame.
Hopefully that includes a mesh 'roof'?In this case, where the garden bed is described as completely enclosed
If there's no roof, I would not let them loose in there. I lost one the other day that managed to fly to the roof of my house! This was a very rare thing, since she flushed right past my head through a partially open cage door in the dark!Garden doesn’t have a roof but a tall fence 6-7ft all the way around. The area is about 80sqft now as their shed takes up 24sqft of it. I know they could fly over the fence but they are pretty tame, as the breeder is only small scale and loves his quail. It’s given rain tomorrow so I will let them out Wednesday when I’m gardening and give some (hopefully good!) updates.
Can they have a wing clipped or is that a no no for quail?
Those look on the largish side, but pretty normal to me. If you get something in the 19g+ size, it's probably a double-yolker. My last hatch had these three monsters in the batch. I put a regular size egg in for reference. They were in the 15-17 gram range, I believe.wow a couple HUGE eggs!
