Freecycle- get stuff, give stuff

Well said, Elderoo. I forgot to mention the warnings about being alone. But I will tell you, it has been a great experience for me. I have given and I have gotten. And it does amaze me what people give away. I was totally bummed out when I missed out on 600 red bricks because I didn't have a way to haul them. The moderator wanted the hay and he has become a good friend. He not only cleaned out all the hay from my barn and chicken coop, he left everything so orderly when it came time to add chickens, all I needed to do was put in waterers and food. (and that is a huge tip of the hat to our forefathers- that coop is over 100 years old!!!!)
And with the prices of scrap metal here, these guys will haul off just about anything.

I've responded to the same guy 3 times because he wanted Pokemon cards for his son. He's never shown up!!!
So yesterday, he wants an IPod for his son...DELETE!!!

There's even been people that want expensive stuff for free.

These are some of the people I referred to in my response before. They leave you hanging or think FreeCycle is charity.

One group I forgot are those "enterprising" people who take your handouts and then turn around and sell them. Me, I dont care what they do with my stuff. I got what I wanted - the stuff is gone.
In fact, I obviously wasn't ambitious or smart enough to turn a buck like they are. A case might be made for lauding such folks. But, it seems to chap others to no end.

There are numerous people on our list who watch the posts like a hawk to make sure they don't miss any of the "good stuff".

Some might say they need to get a life. "FreeCycle - home to packrats everywhere." That's the way I 've always seen it, at least on some level. A bunch of packrats , feeding off each other.

On the other hand, it strikes me as "good community," people doing together. I guess it leaves room for both. The fact that I participate says something about me.

I have given away so much useful stuff on freecycle! I have received a few things, most is gone by the time I respond if it is something that I can use.
I do have a problem with some of the request such as laptops, working cars, cruises etc...lol

I've been a member of our local Freecycle for about 3 or 4 months, and I only joined so that I could give stuff away that I'd rather not throw out. When DH and I bought our house, the former owner had "landscaped" with red bricks, and they looked hideous; we dug them out of all the flower beds and the garden, and then stacked them behind our shed. They sat there for two years because we didn't know what to do with them and they were too heavy to throw out with the trash. When I heard about Freecycle, I thought, what the heck...why not see if anyone wants them? Within a minute of posting, I had a taker; over the course of a week, she and her husband came out and loaded up my bricks to use for a patio project. Voila! Bricks were gone with absolutely no work on my part, and someone got some good stuff for free!

We've given away an old bicycle, two cell phones, clothes, stationary, a pretty flower pot, a bag of food after cleaning out the cupboards, and all sorts of other stuff. I just love how it disappears, and how it's not getting thrown into a landfill.

Edited to add: Oh, and I forgot, we've had problems with no-shows too. Even had a no-show for one of the cell phones I gave away this week! Our local moderators have a reporting system; if you've done two no-shows to a fellow member, you're removed from the list. Plus it's just plain bad manners...so rude to leave someone hanging who's doing you a favor!

I belong to our local freecycle and find it very useful for getting rid of things I can no longer use. The other day I saw a post for wanted fertile chicken eggs for a home schooler. I offered her some eggs. When the lady came out she fell in love with the little babies that had just hatched from under momma. I gave her the eggs but she bought some little chickies. (of course I found out if she knew how to take care of them, plus gave her some suggestions and her mom use to have chcikens.) Mom hen still has 9 little chicks to take care of. Someone said that chickens can't count so I figured she wouldn't miss just few. Our freecycle does allow free animals and I will deffinately use it for extra roos. But I really hate to see free puppies and kittens given away. I think people who do not want puppies and kittens should spay and neuter.

Update- I contacted the moderator to ask him about possibly changing the no animal rules. That very morning, he posted a poll and results were in favor of offering animals. And the best part is, he has just gotten a few chickens and is really enjoying them. I hope he joins this forum soon!!!

I was offering a king sized waterbed w/ california king mattress, had a no show three times and it was the moderator's own daughter, the third time, he even told me he would bring her himself, the worst part is I had another person interested and couldn't tell him one way or the other and now the headboard is gone to the flea market and the frame is going to become a sandbox, and the slats will be used to make my nestboxes,

wondered why I was giving it away to begin with. Now what to do with that mattress

I have received some items that I figured I was just hauling off for people, geez

I live in a Metropolis where I belong to about 6 freecycle groups. Over time, we have given and received an incredible amount of stuff. Freecycle is a great place to ask for egg cartons, by the way!

Craigslist.org has also been a great resource for free and cheap stuff.
Here is my best FREE find:

A 20 x 40 foot modular building...Yup...FREE. I also got a free 20x60 modular but it wouldnt go around a sharp turn in my drive so I gave it to my next door neighbor. Wow was he a happy camper!
