Freedom of speech

You can't be jailed for expressing your opinion on your property.

The only caveat to that is that if there are "billboard" or sign regulations in your township they may be able to fine you.

However, that may not have been the best way to express your frustration. Have you tried to contact any domestic violence support groups in your area? There is a reason why police are not allowed to know where the DV shelters are: they are huge offenders!

If "many officers stopped by" in a supportive manner then don't judge the department by the actions of one officer. But, you need to help your sister! Look for support groups, victims assistance. PM me if you need more help. Seriously....... please..........

Oh I so agree, please keep up the hope your sister will find the help she needs.

Actually, I might be wondering if libel could attach to those written words. I agree with the OP--it was not the brightest action to take, but all that can be done now is for the OP to take the consequence. The genie can't be forced back into the bottle, sadly enough, particularly if there are pictures that exist of the sign.

I hope all goes well for everyone involved. Domestic violence is a terrible thing.

I have contacted domestic violence groups in the area but since my sister is to afraid to say anything they tell me there is nothing they can do. The sigh was against the sheriff but all the deputys that have stopped by have been supportive of my cause. The governors office has told me they didn't think I would be jailed but IDK.

That sounded sort of smarmy.... most people refer to America as a democracy. The difference between a republic and a representative democracy is fairly esoteric. While I do not denigrate the value of knowing it, it is not the manner in which most people refer to our government.

Our own government refers to itself as a democracy!
