Yep ,go with the white rock sexed cockeral, will take longer than the cornish cross. Sexed cockeral at Mt Healthy about half price as straight run.

White birds make for better looking dress birds. White rock rooster get alot larger than the hens.

After all the white rock is half of those great Cornish meat birds.

Dont understand your fear of the cornish X rock cross, raise them every year, not many problem unless you keep them longer than 10 weeks.
They produce more meat for the feed cost, You will have fryers in 8 weeks, and even cornish game hens at 4 weeks(ones you find in the stores)

All chicken can be butcher for meat, only thing some cost more in feed and time!!!!!!!

Mt Healthy, also sell mixed heavies cockeral, then you could see with breed you like best for meat, also cheaper chicks...

i was also kinda creeped out by the cornish (no offense folks its just a personal preference) so we went with the red broilers from Ideal. LOVED them! will totally get them again. here's what we liked:

* out of the 15 we got, only 1 had the weird leg thing
* they totally pipped and popped around the yard like 'normal' chickens and they were good rangers. sure they ate like pigs but thats ok
* they were really meaty! probably had smaller breasts than the cornish but that was ok
* didnt have even one flop over dead despite a hot hot summer

we ended up keeping 2 of the smallest hens - and i'll be darned but they are good little layers. we're hoping to get some 'free' meat mutts this spring. we also kept the one weird-leg one.. honestly neither of us want to eat him.. and we were hoping he'd just flop over dead from some heart attack.. but he's out there doing all the normal rooster stuff.

to someone's point (sorry cant find it now), the colored broilers do have dark feathers - some were just about black. so the plucked bird didnt look 'grocery store ready' but we didnt care.

good luck!
