Freezer Camp For The Whole Flock!!!!!!!!!

Sound advice. The idea of an egg eating chicken had crossed my mind as well.

Mine are older than yours and have not layed an egg but I went over to the feeding and watering section and learned something new. I thought I was feeding mine well and I learned that the recommended food I was giving them Layer crumbles was not high enough in protein to help them lay plus all the scraps and other stuff I gave them was also inhibiting the percentage of protein they needed - so before you send them off to camp - please consider that they need time to fully mature and perhaps more protein and a higher content of lysine to encourage egg production - I mean they have to ovulate and that isn't going to happen until their little bodies are ready. Human females don't all mature the same why should chickens just magically all ovulate on some schedule we imposed. There is so much more to consider. molting, light. feed. Winners never quit and quitters never know the sweet reward of success! It is in the holding on and endurance the race is won - not in the actual crossing of the finish line.

I will leave you with one thought:
Often just before we reach our goal we experience Frustration. It is that frustration, the peak of the mountain, that signals how close we actually are to the goal and if you quit now at the point of breakthrough you will never reach the goal which is at the easiest point to attain, now that you are at the frustration point, if you just don't quit!

Its your choice, they are your birds, but if you give them as much time and attention as you say you are, then you should want what is best for them. If not, then kill them and eat them, just don't get anymore chickens if your expectations are so hi. You will just put yourself in the same situation. Again...they are animals....NOT MACHINES!

Bless you. I agree. Some people should not have any animals. They do not understand the nature of living things. Or they didn't do their homework.

April? I have hens that hatched in JANUARY that haven't started laying yet. I wouldn't dream of putting them in the freezer. I am waiting ever so patiently for them to lay. I totally understand your frustration though. Out of about 25 hens (all hatched in Jan and Feb of this year) the most eggs I've gotten in one day is 7. I usually get 3-5. My best layer is actually my (only) Silver Laced Wyandotte. I get an egg from her just about every day.

What exactly is the vent and where is it located on a chicken????

the Butt, the hole where the egg comes out, there are 2 bones that you can feel on eather side, hold you chicken like a football, and place you fingers,

if you birds are from Jan. there is something going on, egg eating, hiding them, or you just have poor layers, I realize some birds are slow but 11 months

Thanks!
I know not everyone has the same opinion, but that is the beauty of diversity!!!

I just hope that people make informed decision, not act out of frustration and haste.
