I had a 75% hatch, 2 pipped and died. 4 made it. Two are pale yellow/white. 2 are dark w/ markings that are different. They were all supposed to be pure line French Black Copper Marans. The eggs they came from were all totally chocolate. I'm just wondering how in the world I got white chicks - 50%! The seller, just keeps repeating that they are "pure lines"...evades the question. It's fine - love the birds I have, no qualms, but I would like to know what's going on. Mutation? Recessive's coming out?

Thanks for any ideas....

Yes, that's what I thought. The seller said the two front ones were indeed French Marans. I don't care either way - I'd just prefer some honesty.

The eggs the white ones came from were actually the darkest chocolate eggs. Wondering about other breeds that might come from a chocolate egg. There are definitely White Marans. They have silkies too so I suppose it could be a hybrid. They said the breeds are kept 60ft. apart in separate pens.

I think I'm going to stalk their sales - then I know what's in their yard - so far I know they sell Silkies and only F. Copp. Marans. Wheatens can come from a maran hatch? Interesting.

I don't see a muff on your chick...I would assume the poster that said it was a Wheaten meant a Wheaten Marans...

It's just a different color.
