I've also seen kids who grew up in homeschool or private schools end up less tolerant of people different than them.  When you are exposed early to people of different colors, ethnicities, religions, etc, you are often a more tolerant adult.

ETA: I agree with OFW, it can be done right if the parents are conscientious about it.

This can occur regardless of the environment. There are racists deep in multi-cultured schools just as easily as in a home environment. Racism is based largely on hate.

Or ignorance. A lot of that down here. My best friend is seriously a Mexican immigrant, and he is the finest man I've ever known

This is definitely true. Just seems like I've been around some people who have been indoctrinated with a very narrow mindset because ___________ is evil. (Insert whatever here, someone probably hates it.) And when it gets passed down through generations via closed teaching, it just gets worse and worse.

Don't think nothing of it.
When I was on the military everyone from the south had this dislike of Yankees.
I find it odd.
