We thought the mountains protected us from tornadoes. Then several came. Then straight line winds a couple times. Oh and an earthquake.

I think anywhere you go is going to have some problems. Pick what you can live with.

But it's so much fun to only deal in absolutes and tell people they are wrong

I was in SC during Andrew, and soon after Hugo; I'll take the ice!  Never fished hard water, but I'm teachable.

#1 son fishes hard water on Michigan; I haven't made it yet. Heard too many stories of trucks & 4 wheelers being suddenly turned into fish cribs.

Plenty of bears up there too, and snow that can measure FEET at a time.

Southern Michigan is far enough north for me to live, though I love to visit the northern reaches of our state where my dad grew up.

That's the wonderful thing about "real" liquor, it's liquid at all temps. Beers can easily freeze while fishing. Funny but true that you use a cooler to keep your beer warm.

I gave up on ice fishing a while back, even before I quit making it out for the salmon runs. I really don't like cold.
