French frogs

No need to apologize... you're just fine... we like the outside observations... besides, it's a comparison... more eyes is better... :)

Thanks Ravyn! I thought it was very interesting! I'm already wondering about my little chicks! How the combs will look when mine are old enough! Lol. I hope my breeders eggs hatch out good, Tuesday is supposed to be ship day then I'll finally have my own

No ones going to point out the fact that Ravyn and SC are comparing co....roosters!?

Personally I like the tighter combs. Ravyn's is still good, but I have seen some that are really big and it doesn't look right. Elvis has a good sheen, I just took those pictures of Johnny in the afternoon with the sun behind me.
What does the SOP call for?

That is my go to reference for my breeding matchups. Paul (and Ravyn

) suggested the best blues come from one black parent, that's why I came up with the combinations I did.
Think of splash as a dilution gene. If I mated my splash rooster to my splash hen, I would get 100% splash chicks, but the dark color would start washing out. I'm trying to use the darkest birds possible to produce the colors I want. I have 3 blue hens with the black rooster, and all are a much lighter blue than the one in the other pen. If I get darker hens this year, I will replace those 3 lighter ones

These are the blues and a splash with Johnny

See how much darker the blue behind Jack is? The edging on her feathers is much more pronounced, and gives her a much better overall look

Dang SC I'm going to have to get some eggs from you later this season if you end up with enough to sell. Those birds look amazing. Foley says he likes to breed his BLRW with a Blue x Blue. He said that is how the germans do it and it results in a more consistent blue on the offspring. I guess black or splash can have varied color of blue offspring? He said he does bring in a good black once every few years to darken the blue back up a bit. I know that's in BLR, but the gene should act the same since its the same BL gene.

Ravyn was joking with me about posting a link on the AM thread. She wasn't fussing at you ;)
I didn't think nothing of it

That was the only splash I had seen until I started googling pictures. He is stunning. Many splash don't have nearly the defined cape that he does. I just need to drop that tail and fill his breast out a little more. I do know that he is a product of 2 blues, that's why I want a good blue rooster, so that I can make good splash using blues. Oz's Clementine is Jack over an extremely dark blue, so hopefully she will get the dark blue, too
So Is Clementine a blue or a splash?

She is sharp looking! I like her!
Splash is the result of 2 blue genes... it's called silver in US Calls, same principle in breeding though... I've seen a lot of splash hens, but not as many roos... but yours is the best looking one I have seen... I wasn't impressed with how others turned out... Don't confuse him... :smack Splash is not the dilute gene... blue is the dilute of black... a single copy of blue shows blue... 2 copies of blue expresses as splash... Susan explained it best with the water in the paint metaphor...

Just found this pic... excuse the wind... :gig
To my untrained eye I can't tell the difference on the combs but my best shots would be that Ravyn's is better?

Didn't you say you were getting yours from Max Strawn? I've heard good things about his birds, so you should get some awesome chicks... :)

I think this was a long time coming... :lau

Do you not have the book???

:smack :smack

Got Foley SLW's you should have the book... :plbb

was going to.......but then sc admitted he was losing........

I made 1 joke, won't rub that in any more... SC has a great base of stock to work with... but seriously, I needed to hear that... I am super critical and much harder on my own stock than anyone else's...

Nope, SC's combs are better... mine isn't horrible, but has room for improvement... his blue's comb is absolutely amazing...

Most suggestions I have gotten here and at the ABC say that blue/blue washes out the blues, but makes the best splash

was going to.......but then sc admitted he was losing........

We all knew Ravyn's co... Rooster was bigger than mine

I like the more compact look of my rooster's comb, and I think that is the more desirable, but hers has a better profile. A lot has to do with how a rooster is posing, too. The picture of Johnny with the girls makes his chest look huge.
Clementine is a splash, the product of Jack and the dark blue hen behind him

I heard of a book on breeding & genes I believe the title was Start where your at with what you have. Anyway I have the title and author saved on eBay & it's never come up once offered for sale. I think it's pretty old.
