It's worse this year, but I've always had these kind of problems. I don't know what sets it off, lol. Any ideas?

Usually they last from between 3-7 minutes and are more common in the summer and spring. I *am* iron deficient as well.
I've finally gotten to the point of considering surgery.. . a big step for someone who hates hospitals with a burning, fiery passion LOL

Does anyone else have this problem? Are there any other uhm, cures? I'd considered any invasive approach absolutely the Last Possible Solution..

I don't know how old you are, and do realize I certainly am no doctor, but my first thought would be hypertension. But if you've always had this issue that is probably not it. I'd see an ENT as soon as possible.

Forgive me since I don't know your climate. I am guessing it is still 'winter' in Australia? Does it get really dry where you are during this time of year? Because when it is winter here in the U.S., the air is as dry as parchment. Coupled with having to heat the house just sucks whatever moisture there might have been out of the air. I know because of the winter dryness I can get severe nosebleeds that come with no trauma, just, whooosh! My solution is to run a humidifier to replace some of the moisture in the air. It helps especially at night.

Mine bleeds when the humidity drops. It dries out the mucus membrane and makes it bleed. Have you tried a humidifier in the house? But first, check your blood pressure, and talk to an ENT.

It's the start of spring but already the temperature has risen... dramatically.. thanks for the suggestions everyone

Definitely get it looked at Magic. My brother was one to have frequent nosebleeds. A cause was never determined.

My son had frequent and severe nosebleeds. They would start from hot summer air, dry winter air, blowing his nose, pretty much looking at him sideways would get him gushing! He was a wrestler in High School, and got many points against him for "blood time."

An ENT Specialist finally had to cauterize his nostrils.

With a camera, we saw that his blood vessels were so close to the surface of the skin inside his nose, that it almost looked like they were lying on top of the skin. Cool and creepy at the same time!

He was not thrilled with the cauterization, but has been happy to not have nosebleeds!

Only you, after speaking with your doctor, can make the choice for you though. Good luck!

If it's dry air, you could try saline nasal spray to keep your sinuses moisturized.

Also, I remember my brother used to get spontaneous nosebleeds when we were little. My mother would give him a popsicle (wrapped) to hold on his nose with his head tilted back, and then unwrap to eat. Maybe an icepack would help? Then a popsicle?

I used to get them all the time. Keeping your nose moisturized and using a humidifyer helps.

NEVER tip your head back, that just makes the blood run down your throat and into the stomach.... blood is pretty gross to puke once it coagulates.

Better to lean forward and let blood drain out of the nose (my Dr's advise). I would pack the offending nostril with TP until it stopped bleeding, That would usually apply enough pressure to get it to stop.
