I didn't really know where to post this, is it might go under coop design. In the last week, 3 of my girls have broken the back"thumb nail." For 2 of them, it tore the quick and bled heavily. Those nails were not what I would say is long. Is that nail supposed to be very short...very little off of the toe?
I'm wondering if there's something about the roosts that contributes. I know that 1 happened on the roost in the morning. I'll post a pic of the roosts.

Nuthatched beat me to it. Chickens don't grip perches by curling their toes around them like parakeets do. Lay the boards flat, that should help. They may actually be falling off at night, as they don't have a tendon that locks their feet on, as sparrows and many other birds do.
