My first ever incubated hatch just finished, and it was great. Most of the chicks hatched out on Friday & Saturday, but I had one not go until late Sunday. The chick is big, and seems okay in all other ways, but it has a few chunks of shell stuck to its back, and looks like a bit of pasty butt. What's the normal action for stuff like this? A mini-bath in warm water? Other?

Thanks!

the other chicks will probably pick the stuff off his back...lol

for pasty butt i use very small scissors and snip it away. it cleans up the area and prevents further messes. Some folks do the warm bath method, other use a bit of warm olive oil.

Congrats on your hatch! What breed?

The chick in question looks to be a splash Cuckoo Marans... his hatchmates are blue/black French Coppers and a bunch of B/B/S Ameraucanas. (This was really a lot of fun!)

Thank you so much for the quick reply!

Just to update this thread with a happy ending... all is well for my little chick, now confirmed to be a Splash Cuckoo Marans.
