Fresh Start

Well if she does turn out to be a little pullet she's going to lay the most gorgeous chocolate colored eggs. Also she sure is a little fighter. I love her.

Nice! Mine is a little fighter too. I read up on feather sexing. I know it's not a "valid" way to sex, but I still think it's interesting. My husband said even the strangest old wives methods are rooted in some truth. I also ran my guess by someone who has a 100% track record on feather sexing! We're pretty sure mine is female!!!

Interesting! I found a link on that here:

So it seems if there are two feather lengths in the wing tips at one or two days of age they may be pullets, but if the feathers are all one length they may be roos.

Really hoping that's true for my little ones! Look at these two-level wing feathers:

Black Copper Marans chick:

Barnevelder chick:

American Bresse chick:

The yellow one definitely looks like a pullet. From what I read it depends on the location of the feathers. There are feathers on top and bottom of the wing. If the feathers on bottom are longer than the ones on top, it is female. If the feathers on bottom are the same length or shorter than the ones on top, it is male.

Ah! Thanks for the really simple description. Going back to the brooder to have another look...

Here's the best chart I found. It really helped me understand what I was looking for.

Wow - great chart, and great photos! I'm pretty sure my yellow Bresse and the BCM have the same pattern. No way I could get such a good photo as yours though.

We really can't tell with the little Barnevelder though. Some of her feathers are longer and some are shorter, but she's so covered with downy fur that we can't figure which are on top and which are underneath!

New batch of eggs just arrived today!!! 5 lavender Ameraucanas and 7 lavender Orpingtons!!! Planning on putting them in the incubator tomorrow afternoon!

How exciting! You are going to have the prettiest silver flock. Plus plus blue eggs from the Americaunas.

I went ahead a bought a fourth chick to brood with the three I hatched. Sex-linked female Cream Legbar, same age as my hatched babies. Excited about a blue egg layer, and it's great to have at least one that's certainly a hen.

Keep us posted on this incubation!

I'm really excited about this round of eggs. The last set was my first time ever hatching eggs! The eggs were not great quality and I still got one to hatch! Now that I'm a little more familiar with the incubator and the process and got gorgeous eggs from a highly recommended breeder, I'm very hopeful! I've been drawn to the lavender coloring since I started researching breeds. Hopefully I get some females!

Congrats on your babies! Planning on hatching anymore? I'd keep hatching if I had more people to give the chicks to but my parents aren't going to be able to take many more and after this hatch I'll be maxed out at my house. It's addicting though!
