friendliest breed

Probably just about any breed depending on how it is raised

One Year ago I caved in to a long running chicken urge and bought 4 Rhode island Reds.
2 in April - Hilda and Hazel
2 in May - Mert and Madeleine
all day old chicks

I have 3 teenagers, all the way through April they played daily with those babies. Not just them, their friends too. I have all sons (15-16-18 at the time) so this kind of surprised me. I couldn't stay away either, I understand the draw.

Meanwhile, I'm preparing for 2 more chicks. Believe you me, I couldn't possibly be more proud Of what I had created preparing for their arrival. I took a dog crate, the size recommended for a Bull Mastiff, threaded on 1/4 inch square fencing to make 2 pens in one crate. I even fixed it so that the same food and water bowls could be easily accessed. It took a couple days to make it.

To make this very long story shorter it boils down to this;
-it took the babies 1/2hour to figure out how to get to the other
side
-an hour later Mert and Madeleine were under the wings of Hilda
Hazel.

I had babies raising babies. It was pretty much the cutest thing on the planet, but I got 2 completely different sets of personalities in the birds.

Hilda and Hazel were both outgoing and friendly. If I sat down in the back yard, I had one on each knee. They would talk to you and need to know what you are doing. If any of the neighbors were out the girls would be next to the fence, watching quietly. They would let anyone pet them. ( Hilda HATED painted toenails - or maybe loved them, but thats a different story).

Mert and Madeleine were very nice and docile chickens just not as personable. If you tried to pet them they back away.

I loved them all.

Madeleine - turned out to be a rooster, he went to another home
Mert and Hilda - Disappeared 5 weeks ago, we think raccoons

Hazel is still with me - She welcomed 4- 1year old buff orpingtons into her coop last week. I'm saving that story for Disney. (haha)

love them and they will love you

For Bantams, I think that Modern Game Bantams are the most friendly. They come trotting up every time I go out, and the hens talk and talk when you hold them.

Out of the chicks I bought this year, the cochins are much more curious, friendly, and wanting to be held compared to the 1 silkie chick I have. I even have what looks like a spitzhauben which is tiny compared to the others but so sweet. The adult polish hens I bought are very sweet. But the best most 'fall asleep in your hand' sweet things have been the bantam porcelain d'uccle (booted bantam) that I bought this year. I fell in love at the feed store when they just settled in for a nap after I picked them up. And I'd said I was done buying chicks....Wrong! I bought those 2 and then 4 more the next week!

I think it still varies with individual chickens. I had originally 4 barred rock, and they were all different. I kept the sweetest of them and sold the rest. (Except the rooster who we ate- who was not mean- only skittish, just annoyed my husband with his crowing all day)
That's with my limited chicken experience.

Seramas! Seriously very tame breed. The roos let an uncoordinated 2 year old catch them and drag them around. The last roo isn't even a "pet", he was just born sweet!

Brahmas, they come in bantam sizes too.

I found on MANY sites that the are docile and calm and great for those with toddlers. I havent had any but I am getting one soon because I have read such good things about their temperments.
