Friendly hen with chicks

I believe I may have an unusually friendly Phoenix hen. I never tried to train her she just naturally liked sitting on me from day one as a 2 day old.

Now she just hatched 5 chicks and is still friendly. I'm the only critter allowed near the chicks. She will karate kick any of her other flock mates if they get within a few feet of them but calls them to eat out of my hand. Now at a week old when she does her little danger scatter sound. Depending on who is closer, they hide under me or mom lol. This cant be normal behavior or is it? Just wanted to share

Said your bird has been like this since she was two days old? She has probably imprinted on you. This is when the chicken gets into their head that you are there mother. She will always be really friendly to you. Her chicks however have imprinted on her.

Yea I don't know. I would have thought she would be more cautious with her chicks even with me. She proved it's just me she trust with the chicks today. A friend sat on the porch step just looking at them under the porch about 8ft away. She made the point of calmly nonchalantly walking all the way over and biting the crap out of his finger while he was just sitting there, then calmly walked back over to the chicks like nothing happened

I have a hen that was 6 years old when I bought her and she is always friendly with me even when broody with chicks and shows the chicks to eat from my hand too. I have other hens that will allow only me near their chicks too, everyone or thing that comes close is fiercely shown they shouldn't have! Haha..
Some chickens are more friendly then others and if the chicks are hers then they may take after mother's behaviour and be friendly like her too.

That's very cool, I'm not the only one with a super friendly hen. Yea I think the chicks are crosses from the golden Phoenix hen and Bielefelder rooster i have and 1 Australorp Phoenix cross. I did hatch some from her 6mo ago and got a fairly friendly red phoenix rooster that I ended up keeping and 3 hens. I was really hoping that some of the eggs this hatch were from my Liege hen.

I will say Red is unique out of the 25 from her bunch and the 100 I've hatched from them. She has no fear when I'm working on stuff making noise. I about hit her with a hammer a few times on the roof of the barn when I was building it. You don't expect a chicken to walk between a hammer and nail and just stand there looking at you when your 20ft in the air installing trusses

here ya go, she just randomly jumped up in my lap today stretching her head over my arm and took a nap while the chicks explored around my chair. All 5 chicks are doing great even the Liege cross I dubbed Sasquatch for the time being because it takes Liege nearly 2 years to catch up to there feet lol here's Big Roo at 10 months and about 28" tall now.
