Friends birds and coops are so freaken nasty!

yeah ive had arguements with him on this and most do not end nicely. Ive tried helping him as a friend to get his stuff better. I just cant help clean up over there as it is to nasty! Like I said the last time I walked in his coop which was about 4 months ago I walked out covered in mites and it took 2 showers and I still felt like i had them on me. I take my business and birds seriously and hate being tied to someone like that if it makes sense. Its even gotten to the point he asked to buy some birds which they were two roosters I didnt need and some chicks and I said no. I think I am going to do something but its tough ya know! Dont want him to get into legal problems but man this is not something that is just a common cold or something. Also ive gotten on him about his feeding habbits. Its strickly cracked corn and dog food when he has it which is not all the time.

That is sad. Even if you call the authorities I wonder how much they can do. After everything you have done I wouldnt hesitate to call them though. Maybe you should call them once a week until something is taken seriously. Of course I suppose he will know who called.

I don't see how he could possibly be making money, but I suppose if he is cutting corners llike that, that is how he is making money. Raising chickens isnt exactly a money making business IMO

Good Luck!

Well he used to breed and hatch out himself however he began taking chickens in people didnt want anymore along with ducks and turkeys. Again I did tell him to seperate his birds but he did not. He takes birds in for free and flips them for $10-$15 a bird. Now im not complaining on that but he does pretty well believe it or not and I just think you should take a good portion of that money to your birds. We just spent $300.00 on more medication bedding, wire, and other materials to fix up our pens for the winter. Do this two-3 times a year to make sure our birds are good and happy.

I'm sorry, I'm having trouble understanding this thread. If someone is abusing or seriously neglecting an animal, he/she is breaking the law. Every state has definitions of what constitutes abuse or neglect. If this man is breaking the law and you are aware, bishopschickens, that he is neglecting these animals, where is the question? I only see a flow chart:

BREAK LAW --> PAY CONSEQUENCES

Any other factors/circumstances/situations/sad stories are irrelevant when it comes to legally-defined abuse or neglect of a living creature.

Am I missing something here?

Hey Brandon! Well, we all know where the diseases came from, taking in birds like that and not quarantining them. I can't believe he just doesn't care! I'm with MissPrissy in calling animal control, but it does sound like you are at a dead end there too. What about the health dept.? You could explain to them that you are concerned about the cleanliness of his place and I'm sure they would do something about it. Just tell them you are a friend and want to remain anonymous. They will have to honor your wishes. Just my thoughts.

jenski,
I understand the part if your breaking the law but its not that easy when its been a good friend to you. Also calling the animal control is out of the question as they have been there before and just joke with him as he is friends, and related by marriage to the officer. I just wanted to get others opinion on what to do without causing a problem between our friendship. So i understand you know how to handle everything and must think im stupid but this is not just a call your county and get this situation fixed with your name unknown. Also this county only has 10,000 people in it so word spreads very fast.

hey stacey,
How has everything been? I know you had your fair share with problems from buying birds! Hope you got everything fixed and the blue laced are doing ok. Yes everyone needs to remember when you get new birds have them seperated ateast 30 days.

Things are going well Brandon! I had to cull my SLW I bought from you, but the BLW is doing great! She's so pretty and I'm expecting to get eggs from her any time now. My Ameraucana I got from Sharon is doing well also. They are both sweet little birds.

Have you thought about going the health dept. route instead of calling animal control. I am quite positive that if you explain to them the situation at your friends place, someone will go out there and make him get things cleaned up or make him get rid of the birds.

Yeah the other thing is chickens do not have the same rights as dogs and cats.

The only other thing you could possibly do is to 'liberate' these animals, which is risky at best and at worst, well,,,,,,not good,,,,,,,

even if you were successful, he can get more.

Light bulb; The sppca or an organization that deals in liberating laying hens etc. an animal rights activist group. If you could get a hold of someone and just let them know about the situation, they could take care of the problem for you. But I wouldn't get involved, law enforcement is not kind to these people at all....!!!!!

no i dont want to get him into any legal trouble but I do want something changed there for the birds. Towards any group peta or anything the answer is no as I do not care for any of them. I think im going to call my state vet and see what they recommend. Its just really bad but thank to everyone for there help. Sorry to hear that stacey on the SLW and hopefully we wont see those certain people with the bad birds again at any show.
