So, We have been really enjoying our 4 Rouen Ducks and have been discussing the possibility of adding 1 or 2 more ducks to our flock! I guess we just want to be sure that everybody will get along. I realize that it depends on the ducks personalities...but, just thought that some of you may be able to suggest a certain breed that you know of that seems to be easy going.
Today I was doing some research on ducks and I found a breed called Black east indies! they are so pretty! they are smaller though and I didn't know if that would cause problems adding them in with the (BIG) rouen ducks?
If you all have any ideas or suggestions I look forward to hearing from you!
-Thanks, April

If you like the look of the black east indies try Cayuga ducks. They are big like the rouens and are very friendly. They go well with each other. I have both breeds as well as some others and out of them all my cayugas are indeed the most calm and friendly.

Edited to fix my bad spelling.

Thanks so much! I also love the Cayuga. I originally was going to buy them instead of the rouen ducks! but, my husband did not like the fact that as they age that they fade to white feathers. I think the Black east indies do this as well. Oh well:) I think they are all so beautiful! I appreciate your suggestion and if I do get some I will post pics. Thanks again!
Does size tend to create problems? Do you think the big ducks will pick on smaller breeds?

You will love the Cayuga. I'll let you in on a secret or at least it must be because no one told me but they look way prettier in person. Pictures can't even compare to how pretty their feathers get. Im not sure they get all white I think its just small spots of a couple white feathers here and there but I could be wrong. Depends on the duck and the size difference. If you have a drake who is bigger than any females then there will be a problem. Like if my Pekins tried to breed with my khaki Campbell's I might end up with a khaki who gets hurt like a leg problem or something. But if your boy is smaller then the girls they will be OK. I wouldn't mix other breeds like calls though. They would be way to small for a big drake and they would be too small to breed to a bigger duck (I think, sometimes you never know).

Thanks again! I am so excited because yesterday after talking to you about the Cayugas, I was looking for them for sale in or near VT(where I live) and it popped up that someone right in the next town actually sells fertile Cayuga eggs as well as fertile east indie eggs:) YAY!!! So, I emailed her and let her know that I do not have an incubator but I would be interested in a mature duck or if she could hatch some for me that would be great! she wrote back and said that she has a 1 yr old Cayuga female that she was going to sell and that she would have some eggs hatching too! I can't wait to meet her and see her ducks! Thanks for all the helpful info.
