I posted this in Caged birds forum but wasn't sure how active of a forum it is soooo... here is a copy just in case someone here can help:

There is a 17 y.o. (Amazon?) parrot that has been quite ill for a few days now:
(I wish I had more info to share)
vomiting all day yesterday, owner said there might be a kidney issue but I'm not sure why they think that... they force fed the bird this morning.
I suggested they give her an electrolyte/vitamin mix & picked her dandelion greens yesterday which was the first thing the bird ate this morn.
Any ideas or info that could help??
Sorry it's so vague, I will try to email them tonight & have more info tomorrow!
Please send happy healing thoughts to Miss Chico, thanks a bunch!

Yes it is pretty vague <sorry to be so blunt> Try to offer the bird nestling food, the kind you soak in water for babies. I have birds, been through some issues myself. Nutrition is important at this stage, and hydration. Some have said to get enfamil (?) baby formula b/c it provides nutrition and support. Some say monkey biscuits that you soak, pet stores may carry them. Or, if nothing else, just take pieces of bread soaked in water mixed with unsweetened yogurt (in case the crop is infected, the yogurt with live cultures), usually that is accepted.

Be sure to keep the bird warm and free from drafts. Be careful if using a heating pad, put it only under half of the cage if at all. I recommend if the bird is valuable, plz do seek veterinary assistance. If money is an issue, check to see if the vet accepts CareCredit (offers no interest financing) and no, i do not represent them. I offer that b/c I've used them - Google it. Hang in there Miss Chico help is on the way. Don't wait - these birds hide symptoms very well - by the time you've recognized it - they are in dangerous territory.

Hi, the fact is vomiting can be a symptom of almost anything, just like in you or i feeling sick and throwing up is a really common symptom.
to check whether Miss Chico has a kidney or problem look at her poo, it is basically made of two parts one green the other white, the white is for all intensive purposes the urine, under normal circumstances that white is quite a bright white but when a bird has kidney or liver problems this develops a green or yellow tinge. Like the person above me said miss Chico needs to go to the vet asap, birds hide their symptoms for as long as possible (so as not to get eaten in the wild) so by the time they show them they are very sick, that this has been going on for days means a very very ill bird that needs antibiotics, birds require very little medication tho so a vet visit will primarily be the cost of consultation, if the owners can not afford this get them to ring up the surgery and ask if they could buy some tetracycline ( this is a broad spectrum anti'b that will treat many but not all illness) to treat her (without the consult). without anti'bs and a vet visit she will probably die. at this stage injectable anti'bs would be preferable. 17 years is still young for a parrot, do everything you can to get her to the vet.
good luck miss Chico.

Miss Chico is alive & well! 2nd vet trip showed better kidney functions... still not fully back to norm, but the family is doing everything they can!
