Thanks CityGirl

how are things around your place?

I would say cold, but I can't really compare it with your world.

Yesterday was lovely. Sunny and in the high 60s. I got all my rosebushes moved to around the coops, the lawnmower fixed, the lawn mowed, gravel laid in the garden, lumber cut and painted for the new coop and the new garden area prepped for the guy to plow it under. I had two students out helping me, but I'm pooped today. I had to spend today recovering.

Stinks to get old!
Today I have been a slug. I did sit and feed yogurt to the babies on and off all afternoon. They are quickly realizing that I am the bringer of yummy stuff and will nibble it off my fingers and not run screaming away when I reach in the brooder.

When do we get pics of the rest of your new babies? Or do they all look like those two? Did you only hatch cochins this time? Are they from your hens or did you purchase them? Do you have trouble getting mailed eggs up there because of the cold?

None that i've ever known do. I've known alot.

Huh.

.... ok kid how about I give you a cookie and we'll call it even?

Wow! You were busy. You deserve a day to recover.

I will take a group shot after I get dinner served up. We're having SILKIE!!!!

I set a batch of dorkings with the cochins but we had fertility problems. So none made it to lockdown

So this hatch were all cochins, I got the eggs from a friend of mine here locally. I have some sizzles that I had shipped up, most look like they have detached aircells

It's not the cold that gets them it's the careless postal employees. So far I've not had good luck with shipped eggs, but if I keep trying eventually I will have a success.

What exactly does silkie taste like (other than the obvious "like chicken")? Does the purple throw you off any? Mine aren't that big. I can't imagine it would be more than a snack's worth of meat. It would make pretty white bean chili though.

I think the egg shipping thing is a crap shoot. I had some shipped from Washington state once and they came through great. Others have come from closer and they were all torn up. Some of it was packing and some of it just was the post office.

I've eaten silkies (black bone chicken) while in Asia for work (I did have the sweetest gig Ever back in the 90's). It's used in a dish we'd call "chicken soup". When in places where monkey was also on the menu, i'll eat the ugly chicken meat without flinching. I thought it tasted like chicken thighs, but it was in soup so it could've been herbs.

Agreed. Mine were packed wonderfully. But last time I candled them they looked to have airsac issues. We'll have to wait and see how they turn out.
