I was given two chickens - one year and the other older, possible another year. Their coop is in my barn with horses and cats. I also have two dogs but they chase the girls so I'm very careful and not too sure how to handle that issue. Anyway, I have had them a little over a week and they don't want to leave the coop...any suggestions?

X3 - your girls need a secure "run" to provide them a place to venture around in . The fact that they have already been chased by your dogs is a large part of their feeling of insecurity....and good reason to make sure you construct a run that will keep the dogs out, chasing leads to catching and catching leads to loss of chickens.

gotcha......I will remedy asap Thanks for the feedback!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X4, your girls need a secure coop/run where they won't be chased by the dogs. It will take them awhile to get used to their new surroundings even if they don't feel threatened. If they know treats like scratch you can use that to help lure them out, just put it at the entrance to the coop leading out (if they don't know it, just throw some in the coop for a few days, they will usually decide they like it pretty quick). There are some dog training threads if you do a search, ie, you may be able to find some tips that will help you train your dogs www.backyardchickens.com/t/829562/training-teaching-a-dog-about-chickens

Awesome - thank you and I will check out the training info

Welcome to BYC!

X5 Give them a secure place that they can relax and feel comfortable away from the dogs and they will be fine. Make sure it is predator proof and at least 10 square foot or more per bird.

Enjoy your new flock and welcome to ours!
