Frizzle breed

I have a frizzle chick. Someone told me yesterday a frizzle Is not a breed and can be any breed. Does that just mean these chickens have a defective Feather gene and Now people are selling then as rare exotic birds?

I agree that 'frizzled' is a feather variety, and with the right genetics can be applied to any breed. I have no idea if the gene is 'defective' (I know nothing about genetics) but I'm pretty sure you can breed for it and while any frizzled chicken may not be a rare commodity, it is certainly less common than any smooth feathered chicken. I think that it would make sense to raise the price at least a bit.

Majority of frizzles that you see are either Cochins, Silkies or Polish. Haven’t really seen it in other breeds.

Frizzles are a breed in Australia & some parts of Europe but not in USA. Whereabouts are you?

They are not defective per se, they are bred for that quality. Their genetics is complicated and you have to be sure you don’t cross two frizzles together or you get something that’s called a frazzle, I kid you not!
A frazzle is a bird with very defective feathering and missing feathers and the feathers become weak and brittle. So if you decide to breed your frizzle chick make sure you breed it to a regular smooth feathered chicken.
