I have a low quality splash silkie frizzle born August 18th. Her name is star. a couple months ago her and her clutch sister (black low quality silkie frizzle) have started preening each other and I keep getting mixed signals if star is a hen or a rooster. I’m 90% she’s a masculine hen, I’ve seen star in the nesting boxes for long periods of time. But I think she tried to crow today I’m not to sure, it was not a familiar crow but it came from my silkie pen(1 rooster 3 hens) can you guys give me answers if star is a hen or rooster?
(Ps my other silkies are in the photos)

Star could also be changing gender? She did have a smaller comb and looked like and acted like a hen, I’m pretty sure she also layed a egg before

If she has ever laid an egg, she is 100% definitely a hen. No matter if she crows or anything else. A rooster cannot lay an egg, and chickens cannot change genders. However, it is possible for hens to go through hormonal changes and become more like roosters. I had a crowing hen once but she continued to lay eggs and didn’t do anything else out of the ordinary.

I think that Star looks like a hen. She does have a rather large and red comb though, but if she is fully mature then that may be normal for her, since she has a straight comb. Some hens have large straight combs. Does your rooster ever mate with her? How does she act around the other hens? That can be a clue.

I’ve never seen any of my rooster mate with her and I’m always outside with them, but I did have two rooster brothers mount each other so it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for my flock. For with the hens she chases everyone except the roosters and certain hens. Star has NOT mounted any of the birds so probably just a masculine hen
