Frizzle question...

I asked on my other post, but think it died, so I figured I would ask again in a separate one.

If I breed my Frizzle Cochin Roo with my Silkie hens, what will I get as chicks?

I tried searching this, but the few posts I found just confused me further.

You would get either smooth cochin feathered chicks or frizzled feathered chicks. The silkie feathers are reccessive to the cochin feathering.

The 6th chick I had hatch today is definitely a mix of the Friz. Cochin and one of my Silkies. Its blue or black (still wet) w/ a straight comb. Will be fun to watch it feather out.

So I do need to breed any pullet chicks back to the Friz. Cochin dad to get Sizzles?

No, you'd breed your frizzled chicks (which carry the silkie gene) back to another silkie. Silkie feathering is a recessive gene, and a copy of it must come from each parent to show up in offspring.

ETA: If I'm calculating it right, some chicks would be regular feathered (but carrying the silkie gene), some would be silkie, some would be regular frizzle (carrying the silkie gene), and some would be sizzles. Not sure of percentages tho.

ETA (again): Scratch that. Listen to Sonoran Silkies - she's the genetics guru here and really knows her stuff...

If you are wanting sizzles I would recommend purchasing some eggs and hatching them out. Sizzles are a work in progress and this would help you as you can get some eggs from someone who has been working on them. My birds came from Jimnjay and they are gorgous. It took her 4 generations of very selective breeding to get to this point.

I think I understand. So I just need to keep a frizzled roo (that hatches from my current chickens), providing I get one and then breed him back to my Silkie hens. Then I should get a Sizzle, if I am lucky?

I would love to buy some Sizzle eggs, along with a bunch of other breeds I see on here, but it will have to wait til I get some Seramas, my current obsession.

I was just really wondering what the chicks I am hatching out had a chance of looking like. I have one Silkie/Cochin mix already...she mostly looks like a Cochin with black skin.

I don't blame you for the Serama addiction. A friend just hooked me and just emailed to offer me more chicks and more eggs. I, of course, will take him up on it. LOL.

 

[Sonoran Silkies]

A first generation cross should usually produce fairly decent sizzle quality. However in the 2nd generation it will start falling apart as the wrong copies of genes start percolating out. As you progress in the generations you select against the wrong verion of the genes and get back towards the desired goal--these birds will breed more and more true as the generations progress and selection is made for the correct gene versions.

A sizzle should be all silkie features (crest, foot featehrs, walnut comb, black/slate skin, mulberry to black comb, body type) except for silkie feathering. In a sizzle, the silkie feathers are replaced by normal feathers (for breeding) or frizzled feathers (for breeding and exhibition).

Guess I have some waiting to do. I have a Red Frizzle pullet also, so I might try to find a straight feather roo and see if I can get some Frizzle chicks from her as well, but other colors.

Chick #7 just hatched, all black (shock, shock)...not a Silkie mix, but maybe another chance for a frizzled roo!

I have broodies sitting on another 30+ eggs that are developing. I am going to be swamped with little black chicks lol I am really hoping that the 12 Silkie eggs from the auction don't all hatch out black!! lol
