Frizzled Cochin chick with eye infection

Well I went through all that too and still nothing compared to her.

In all honesty, I went and got another chick, have them seperated but she can hear her and she has perked up, she is doing better, less lying around and all that. But I still cannot get her to stop scratching and I feel her head would look better if I did. I know from my education, scratching their eyes enough can lead to scratches which can lead to infection and she may just have an infection from the scratching because it has gotten worse since I noticed her scratching.

So if I can just find something to make her stop.

Anyway, I have had her for about 2 weeks I think, she is doing well weight wise and growth wise, just her head looks horrible. When I got her I started feeding her my food which is the Dumour Chick Starter. I have since added the Terramycin to her water and alternate that with electrolytes just so she gets both, obviously the med is more important and today I haven't given her the electrol since she has perked up. But I have got to find what is causing this. The only part are her that looks bad is her bony part above her eye is purple and i know that is not right.

Thanks for your help though, I do appreciate it.

Ok here is an update, I picked her up to put her eye med on and now she smells like rotted meat.

I read one disease that said if they have this their breathe will smell rotted but I can remember which disease it was. First I smelled her just but picking her up, then I smelled her head and it stinks, then I tried to smell her mouth and I am assuming I did.

So if anyone knows this one let me know asap so I can try and treat it, she is doing great and I don't want it to overcome her right now if I can avoid it.

Thanks

Ok, no blue under her wings.

But now she has the bubbles in the inner corners of both eyes. This just showed within the hour. Also her eyelids are fine but the skin around her eyes are swollen, more so toward the beak and not the neck.

Please let me know what i need to treat her with.

Thanks

Ok, I am going back to CRD. Does anyone know if TSC sells the Tylan? Do you inject it directly into the chest? I have never given shots to anything so skinny.

Also, can this be the same thing that caused my first Frizzled to die, she was about this age but showed no signs of being ill. Then at age 12 weeks approx, my Silkie just up and died no sign of being sick.

I first had my original Frizzle and the Silkie. When the first Frizzled died, I got this Frizzled. All 3 came from the same person, and same run. She has I would say close to or over 100 chicks, in a small garage, this does not include her actual grown chickens.

Please let me know what you think. I have a baby Silkie here now and I don't want her to get this, I have them seperated, and everyone washes their hands with anti bacterial soap before touching the other one.

the smell is associated with infectious coryza... also the bubbles in the eyes so that would be my guess rather than CRD.
It is a pretty nasty infection and here is some info for you on it ... (terrimycin is NOT going to be sufficient to treat this... I know vet has given combo of Baytril injection with Doxycycline but LS50 is also advised along with a few other antibiotics... Tylan is also listed though it is generally considered less potent than the LS50 (though I can not confirm that in the literature)
Here is article on TYLAN injectible (incl dosage and injection tips) ... :

Chicken Medications
by Dr. James Barton and Clarence Gillihan
(excerpt)
".....Bacterial Diseases:
Purchase a bottle of Tylan 50 and several 3cc
syringes with 25 to 30 gauge 1/2" needles. Give your hen 1 to 1 1/2 cc. of Tylan under the skin of the neck .........Continue daily injections for three days but not more than five. Withdrawal time is one month. Tylan does not have much activity against coccidia, but it is very good against Mycoplasma bacteria which is responsible for some respiratory diseases.

To inject Tylan 50, pull the hens feathers back
to reveal the skin on base of the the neck on her back. Lift the skin up and insert the needle gentlty but firmly into the skin just far enough to allow the Tylan to be injected. You will be able to feel it. Be careful that you do not inject yourself. Make certain that you do not push the needle through the skin and out again not injecting at all................

Because Tylan is so powerful, it is recommended
that you purchase some Beneficial Bird Bacteria
and feed it to your chicken after she recovers.
Tylan wipes out all the benficial bacteria that is normally present in a chickens digestive system.

Also, Tylan can kill skin cells near the site of the injection so you should not use anything stronger than Tylan 50 - a stronger variety, Tylan-200 is also available at your local feed store, but this will likely do more harm than good.

When purchasing syringes, get them from a
local drug store. The 'human' grade needles are a little sharper than the vetrinary grade. The cost is about the same and your hen will thank you...."

Thank you so much, I have been waiting.
I am off to TSC now to get the stuff.

However, should I really give her that much? She is so small.

Other question, this says to give in back, the other things I have read says give in breast just under the skin.

Which should I do? I have vaccinated cats and dogs all the time in my job, and doing it per your directions is the same, but doing it just under the skin on the breast is different.

Please let me know.

Thanks

...on base of the the neck on her back...

if you are more comfortable giving the injection in the breast I see no reason not to with the tylan (however only if it is the tylan 50 and not the 200 as per warnings in that article) ... be careful as there are airsacs located in the back (see the underlined quote in the box above re the base of the neck)
