Would vote roo, those sure look like rooster tail feathers and saddle feathers on the back.

Crested one is for sure a rooster. Other bird in the photo is a hen. They are not Houdans; the male looks like a Polish mix, and the hen is also a mix. Houdans would be pure black, with five toes.

Your crested bird is a rooster, but the other chicken is a hen. You do not have Houdans. Houdans have five toes, and are black in color.

Houdans should not be pure black. They should be mottled black and white or pure white. Only two accepted colours.

Here is one of my Mottled Houdans.

Oops, yeah, I forgot about there being Mottled Houdans. For some reason black is the only variety that came to mind...

Frankenfurter is indeed a rooster. He got on his first lady today. But he boop boops around the yard like a hen and mostly keeps to himself. I'm keeping him because he's so sweet. And he's polish so I appreciate the clarification. I was guessing houdan because he has a V comb that's pretty evident.

What about this houdan? I think it's female based on the last picture posted of a roo.
It was born the last week of may.
