this EE is going to drive me mad. I’m sure of it. I’ve done everything I can to help her but I guess she’s just screwed up.

Ok so this chicken has everything wrong with her. She lays eggs filled with calcium deposits to soft shelled eggs and now blood on the egg shells. Today being the 2nd one we’ve gotten with blood on it. Except this one was significantly less than the one two days ago. She even laid a ginormous double yoker.

I have looked this chicken over head to toe. Everything is fine. She’s acting completely normal, she’s in good spirits and the rest of the flock is healthy.

Things I have done for her, I put apple cider vinegar in their water bucket. I have mixed oyster shells in their food. I clean their roosting board once a week. What else can I do for her?

What are you feeding? Often too much calcium from eating a layer will cause calcium deposits.

Soft eggs are often from stress.

Vinegar can interfere with calcium uptake.

Blood on the outside of the shells is from the cloaca stretching out or ruptured blood vessels. Generally they are nothing to worry about.

How old is this hen?

She’s one year old. Started laying in February. I’m praying it’s stress as our Golden Sex Link picks on her often.

They’re fed layer crumbles. Which I just mixed with oyster shells hoping it would help. The vinegar was a last ditch option because I don’t know what probiotic to get to help to put in their water.

I had calcium deposits on my eggs when I fed a layer. For some birds it's too much calcium. Birds like sex links lay more and need more other breeds that lay less often get too much calcium. I personally feed a higher protein all flock ration, with a separate bowl of oyster shells for the calcium needs.

Your hen is also a fairly new layer so she may still be working the kinks out of the system yet. Some can take up to 6 months to get regulated and others are fine from the start.

So it’s probsbly a mixture of everything. From stress to to much calcium to being a new layer. That makes sense.

We have 4 2 sex links, a RIR, and her. The rest have zero issues. So she stresses me out. She’s always been our problematic hen. It started in October when she broke her beak. I knew they she was going to have issues.

What feed should I get?
That's your decision. I feed an All Flock ration, also goes by a flock raised, I've also fed a non medicated starter grower long term. Layer can be okay, but in my experiences it isn't the best choice for my flock.

Mostly I was just trying to figure something out. Like if there was an option that wasn’t just layer feed because I’ve never seen anything else? I was thinking of trying the regular feed and then adding the calcium in. Just you know trying different things. See if it helps.

I know the struggle finding something other than layer pellets and corn, but at my request to the manager, my local TSC ordered grower/ finisher and all flock raiser which I mix 1-1 with oyster shell on the sides and a liw amount of treats. They seem to be happy and healthy now

Ok this is what I was thinking. I can get a flock raiser feed at our local store and I was thinking of mixing it with oyster shell and leaving some on the side. She doesn’t seem to like extra calcium so I’m assuming she’ll be the one that won’t eat it
