Hey everyone,

I posted a couple of times in the newbie forum earlier this week, and figured it was time to graduate! I wanted to share with you my chicken story.

At the weekend a friend of mine got 5 chickens. 4 of these had been raised together and the 5th came from a large flock where she was being bullied. Sadly, this submissive chicken got a bit of a beating in her new flock too, so my poor, panicked friend started desperately ringing around to find a new home for this hen. I can't say I was planning n having chickens any time soon, but nor had I ruled the idea out and seeing this poor girl, I had to take her.

So Mabel (who we think is an Australorp) came to live with us. But Mabel looked lonely. I came on here asking if chickens can live a lonely life or if they need companionship - the answer was a unanimous "get her a friend". So I started an Internet search for a local lone chicken. Not as easy as I thought it would be- lots of roosters and cockerels but few chickens. One breeder I contacted said he had a couple of mottled javas, but really I only wanted one. When I called him the next day, he told me he actually had a young Delaware who he couldn't show. I'll take her, I said, so early Friday morning I headed off to collect Molly. We now have two chickens that couldn't be happier. They snuggle up together and get fed copious amounts of worms that my kids dig up!

I can't seem to add photos using my iPad, but you my avatar is a pic of both my girls sharing an apple.

Thanks for reading.

:)

Have you ever gone from 10 chickens to 50 chickens in under a week? LOL! Great story, and some very lucky lil' girls you got there!

Lucky girls, the both of them! I went from 0 to 5, but at least I was planning on it. Well, not that many, but the gaining of chickens part. ;)
