So, my rooster started crowing, I came home from teaching on Wednesday and heard a strange noise ( tortured cat and rusted horn ) in the backyard, rushed there fearing a predator, no, it was just Caspar the rooster , trying to crow, he finally got a hang of it and does it quite often and loudly today was weekend, I hope he „calms“ down, or we have to go another way

Roosters' first attempts are crowing are, well, pathetic. I think you described Casper's crows very well!

I hope for everyone's sake -- including his -- he begins stretching his vocal capabilities a bit less.

So, it is time for poor Caspar to move on/out, he started jumping my smallest hen, I was aware that that could be a problem, but was hoping she would either be fast enough to evade him, or that he wouldn’t be interested in her, but no, he had to have her rehoming will not be possible ,cos he has no pea comb, and he is a Wyandotte I feel bad for him, he hasn’t done anything wrong, but he is way too heavy for my little hen

On a happier note, bathing season has officially started as of yesterday

So, today Caspar ( I gave him a grace period of almost 6 weeks) moved out, he won’t serve as a meal ( as of yet) his new owner has some young chicken and wants him to watch over them, since he hasn’t been a bad rooster, only too heavy, I hope he will have a few good years at his new home
My oldest hen Caro had trouble with bumble foot, again I was afraid that was it, but after treatment she recovered and has now been laying eggs, again , she is up to 4 now I plan on hatching as many as possible, since Caspar moved out, I will collect her eggs for the next 10 days, either, I have a broody which will sit on them or else I will use a brooder ( don’t have one, but I can get someone else with a good brooder to take care of it)

I just sent off my two roosters to a new home this morning. The younger one was a good boy; the older one was a total jerk. I didn't need or want roosters but it was still a bit sad to see them go. I took a video of Moses crowing because he had a beautiful voice.

I always have trouble with good roosters, if they are jerks, I don’t mind seeing them go, but most are nice, and only have to leave cos they crow too loud/much , I feel bad for them, I only managed to rehome 3 roosters, all the others went into the freezer

I haven’t dared hoping, but my oldest hen ( almost 12 years) laid her 5th egg today, since I don’t have any broodies right now, I contacted someone with a brooder, but he will only hatch 20 eggs and more ( he has got a big machine) , sooo.. got some luxury problems, if many of the eggs hatch

Time to update this thread, I got 21 baby chickens from my hatch ( someone hatched them for me in an incubator) 2 Caro eggs ( she turned 12 year old this month) hatched, one rooster and a hen, I names her Casey . Yesterday, all 11 “baby” roosters moved on, even though they were only 3 months old, all that fighting was not only getting to me, but also the hens, now all is calm again

This is one of the hens I am keeping, I would love to keep all of them, but my chicken coop is too small to keep all of them

Life was crazy, as usual, I kept all my young chickens and now have the problem that avian flu is very bad this year, and all my chickens need to be cooped up in a covered run, I did cover it with a heavy duty tarp, but it was too dark, and the chickens didn’t want to go there, so I ordered a transparent tarp, bad quality, ordered another one, this was better quality, yesterday, I pulled down the old tarp and covered the run with the transparent one, chickens were happy, but…since they are twice as many in the run as before, I need to enlarge it.

This is Casey, daughter of Caro, my oldest hen …

This here is the daughter of Screamie, my meanest chicken, she is a full throw back of 1/4 heritage of javanese bantam chicken

On the left is Nora, her black feathers gleam green in the sun,don’t know who her mother is and right the daughter of Shirin, the Barnevelder I got for Christmas last year

I own 3 splash Isbar hens, those are their 3 daughters, but don’t ask me who is from which hen
