From There to Here: The coop that moved with us and crazy life.

The box of shame. First ever broody, and first attempt at breaking one. Probably should have put her in the crate much sooner, but I was hoping she’d give up because it was her first time and we kept taking the eggs. But I notice she is developing a mite infestation. So she’s in the box, and I’m off to buy poultry dust.

I’m happy to say It took less than 48 hours to break Smiley, and she’s off the nest.

I’m wondering if her being broody has anything to do with the other hens continuing to lay smaller eggs than expected. The Legbars and Faverolles are only supposed to lay medium eggs, but half of theirs are still registering as peewee. The Easter eggers and Olive eggers are both supposed to lay L/XL, but the EEs are still laying small, and the OEs are only up to medium. Maybe I’m just impatient, but I feel like our hens started laying full size much faster before. I hope they get it in gear soon. Weighing eggs for recipes is getting annoying.

Finally finished paining the coop! 😁😍

Enjoyed what was probably the last warm day of the year and my daughter and I spent some time hanging with the chickens. My girlie is definitely the chicken whisperer in our family. I am so proud of this girl’s bravery and perseverance. She was the first person our roo decided to try and attack, and it really freaked her out. He left a couple of good bites on her legs too. But after I explained to her what to do, and gave her an update of broom handle so she could hold him at a more respectful distance, she was back in there the very next day, and is in there almost daily to snuggle her hens.

In other news, the second round of mite treatment seems to be doing it’s job. We’ll do one more round tomorrow and I’m hoping that will be all we need. It worked much better once it occurred to me to dust them while they were sleeping on the roost, rather than trying to chase them around the run. 🤪😏
