Hello Everyone,

I am excited to be a part of the chicken community. My husband and I began raising chickens, here in Alaska, a little over a year ago. We are trying to get our family more self sufficient when it come to feeding ourselves, not to mention the fact that it is extremely healthier to grow your own food. We do not eat our chickens, just the eggs.

We started out with six hens and a rooster and now have 16 hens (I think they are all hens) and a rooster. We hatched our first chicks this spring which was awesome!

I am looking forward to learning and growing with the group. Thank you all for all of your past and future advice.

Welcome to BYC. If you go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum, you can locate the Alaskan thread and lurk or post on it. You may find other chicken neighbors in your area.

Very refreshing to hear of someone without a serious overload of roosters. I'm sure your girls keep your roo on his toes.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. My family and I have vacationed in Alaska on a couple of occasions (including June of this year) and we love it there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens do you have?

You will want to chat with your chicken neighbors to see how they survive your brutal winters and how they do things....https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/84141/north-to-alaska

You also might like to join one of our sister sites on being more self sufficient....http://www.sufficientself.com

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!
