Frost bite

My chicken nugget has yellow and black spots at the top of her crest. It looks a lot like frost bite and it probably is. We’ve tried putting Vaseline (petroleum jelly) on her crest. I’m not sure if it’s working or not. In fact, it looks worse. Any ideas on how to cure frost bite? If Vaseline is the best we can do, how much should we put on their crest? And how many times a week or day should we put it on?

If it’s frostbite do not touch it. You’ll damage it more. Vaseline is a preventative measure only.

You can not "cure" frostbite.

Applying Vaseline is a method to help PREVENT frostbite.

Agreed. Leave it be. The blackened parts will eventually fall off no matter what you do at this point. I haven't found frostbite bothers most birds when it's mild.

When my roos had frost bite in their combs I didn’t do anything to them. They say it’s best not to rub frostbitten skin, mine healed and the tips fell off but nothing serious came of it. To prevent frost bite you can put Vaseline on combs and wattles.

Unfortunately frostbite causes permanent damage, but the good news is, chickens seem to recover well from it. Don't touch it. There's nothing you can do to "cure" it. Eventually the dead/damaged skin will come off. Keep an eye out for signs of infection. If it looks like it is becoming infected, colored drainage/oozing/smell/etc. post again and someone can point you towards an antibiotic and correct dosage.
