Frost Bitten Feet

~~Frosty is doing absolutely great, she has adjusted better than I could have imagined. She loves to hang out with us in the living room, watching TV and tuning in George the dog when he gets to close. She doesn't hurt him she just lets him know she likes her space. She loves to sit with me but I can't always be holding her so today we made her a custom perch, thanks to Redriverranchmn for the great idea, we just modified it a bit. So far she loves it, I think it makes her feel like a big girl hen.

Just wondering if anyone knows how to fatten my little Frosty up. She's doing really well but seems to be really thin. I know she is compromised but I think she needs a little more fat on her bones........Any ideas?

How about scrambled egg, dry cat food, unsalted canned tuna, hamburger, liver, sunflower seed, or some 24% gamebird feed? I would feed her flock raiser or unmedicated chick starter which are mostlt identical and 20 % protein, but you need to give her calcium in crushed oystershell on the side when she starts laying.

Protein foods would be higher calorie and healthier for her. You have to be careful giving too much carbs or fat because they may cause GI upset or diarrhea. I would feed a good 20% protein feed, and just add a few snacks of the above list. You don't want to go overboard on the protein because large amounts can cause gout, but give her some carbs and goodies too, just have it all balanced so she will get good nutrition. Extras should not make up more than 10% of her diet. Some bantams are just on the light side also. Good luck with your little sweetie.

Update......!!!!

Frosty is doing exceptionally well!!!!
She is all healed and no longer needs her stumps wrapped.
We built her her own little coop and fenced off a section for her to run around outside. She absolutely loves being a real chicken. Being outside with the other chickens and socializing.
She even tries to scratch the ground like she had feet. I guess you can take the feet from the chicken but you can't take the chicken out of the chicken lol.
She even has a coop mate, Ellen has become her new friend/mother.
It was such a long road with her over the winter but it has all been worth it.
I know she's only a chicken but it warms my heart to see her so happy and healthy given what she went through.

She's only a chicken, but quite an amazing one! So glad to hear she's doing well!
