Frostbite - 1st occurrence

We tried to use a bucket with horizontal nipples, and a heater/de-icer inside, so no wet wattles. But BOTH de-icers didn’t work... bucket froze up barely below freezing (inside coop). Then, we tried a bucket heater. This worked, but temp was around 80F (as stated on package). But, the problem was that the welds on the wire cage (keeping the heater element away from plastic bucket sides) was rusting. We are not sure if birds refused to drink this water due to the temp of the water or all the rust. We cleaned it out daily to try to remove rust, but it got rusty fast. They know how to use nipple waterers, so that wasn’t the issue. However, we ended up with a heated dog bowl elevated pretty high, but quite possibly they were walking around with wet wattles.
