ya its been -28 here what I did was block half of the vent on both side and have heat lamp on will turn off Saturday temperature will climb to 28 degrees. I only put lamp on when it start dropping -5 and stay haven't had problem with comb. but my coop is well insulating well.

I would use heat till above freezing at 32.

I never use heat unless it gets down close to zero, but many never use it ever. It can be dangerous in coops, and we see many coop fires here on BYC from falling or broken heat lamps catching bedding on fire, lint and dust on lamps, frayed cords, and even burns from being too close to heat lamps. If someone does use heat, they should be vety cautious to secure and resecure lamps or heaters. Keep them away from pine shavings and other bedding.

We're I live it got down to -20 to I put I believe it was Vaseline I put on there combs to help them but dont quote me on this I could be wrong and it help stop it a little

Thanks everyone. I will just continue keeping an eye on them at this point. They are dust bathing today, and acting fairly normal now that the temps have gone above 0. If the frostbite hurts, they certainly aren't showing it. And three days of above freezing weather should help. yay!

I would use heat till above freezing at 32.

That would mean heating 24/7 here for months on end. Then the chickens get dependent on the heat - not naturally acclimated to the cold. If the power went out and a person didn’t have a generator, at best they’d have a coop full of miserable chickens. At worst, you’d end up with a bunch of dead chickens.

Does it even get below freezing in KY?
