I noticed some foot issues with a few of my birds having swollen spots on their feet.. Being winter and Maine we have had some brutally cold days. I shovel paths for them. The bedding is deep litter (pine shavings) with shavings or straw in the nest boxes). I have been googling and reading forums and looking at images and essentially getting information overload. Is there a good reference article that you would recommend that would help me determine if I am dealing with one or the other or a combination of things regarding feet and legs in birds over 4 months?

1) What type of bird , age and weight
Hatchery Easter Eggers and Barnyard Mix from my hatchs All older than 4 months.

2) What is the behavior, exactly. Majority of them are acting fine but I noticed swelling when doing feet exams where we've had an abnormally cold winter here in Maine. This is the first winter I've ever had issues with swollen feet or possible frostbite on anything other than the comb. when reading the forums I find scaly leg mites and gout come up a lot when some of the posts suggest frostbite so I am looking maybe for an article or someone who can spell out for me the difference..

I know scaly leg mites to look for lifted scales, I know Frostbite there will probably be a blackened area ..

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Well the ones that have feet that are obviously swollen and one who I am sure will lose a leg I brought in and put in a dog crate in my finished basement with food and water and soft towels/blankets to lay on.

I'm looking for information on how best to treat them so that I can help them start the healing process instead of making things worse by treating for the wrong thing or the wrong way.

Thanks in advance
Laurie

Every picture tells a story. Might I suggest photographs uploaded of your concerns to aid the BYC community to helping you..

This is one of them

Toes were frozen. The blackened portion is 'dead', and will fall off. Bird in second set of pictures has already lost frozen toes. Such birds generally adapt and still have a good quality of life. What do they roost on ? Many recommend 2 X 4's with the large side up so that they effectively cover their feet when roosting.
