Frostbite thoughts

My rooster, Georgia, has a little frost bite on his comb and wattles this year but he's happy and acts as if nothing is wrong. He had frostbite last year and it never even slowed him down. All the girls are fine, the 19 babies that hatched in October are fine also. Sometimes we need to let them take care of things, under our watchful eyes.

Like you, I’m worried about frostbite and know it can happen no matter what, but I’m also trying to do what I can to prevent it. I’ve been using Musher’s Secret on combs and wattles and so far, so good, even on my cockerel’s huge comb. It’s a product that was originally used on the paw pads of sled dogs. It’s a waxy substance and seems to be doing the trick. I’ve been applying it every night and highly recommend it! I got it on Amazon. Good luck!!

I wish my boys would allow me to do that to help protect their huge combs. Don't think that's going to happen.

Now is the time to be careful, it is when it warms up in the day, and everything that was frozen melts and fills the air with moisture, and then freezes tonight! Yesterday, I flipped bedding, broke up manure clumps, added dry bedding, to keep things as dry as possible.

Good idea to add dry bedding...didn't think about this!

It’s been -3 here with windchill into negative double digits
All my roosters have mild to moderate frost bite on combs.
It was so cold several days the hens would not come out of the coop and I made a bad mistake.
I put a pan of food (not a mistake) and of water (THAT was the mistake) in the coop.
Rooster drug their wattles in it and got frostbite there too.
Nothing I can do about it now.
Have heated waterer on the way. Maybe that will entice the hens out on the worst days.

My Leghorn Rooster got serious frostbite this winter, I took him to the vet and the vet prescribed him silver sulfadiazine cream, I've been applying it and his frostbite is healing. He has had frostbite in the past but this was awful. Last year I put Vaseline on all the hens and rooster and there wasn't much of a sign of frostbite, but I didn't get the chance this year. I feel so bad for them.

But good news healing very nicely!

Can you buy this cream online or in the store?

I was stumped on how my roo got bit this year. The temps were i think 15 at the low, coop is ventilated and dry. I think i know what happened though, two chickens got bit the roo and a dom both of those birds sleep with their heads resting against a window. I think they did it to themselves, non window birds are perfectly fine.

I do it by flashlight at night while he is roosting- otherwise there is no way I could catch him! And he would probably act like a bobble head even if I could catch him. The first few nights he moved a little, but after at least a month of doing it nearly nightly he doesn’t even flinch. I even think he secretly likes it haha.

I praise my girls every day for being so tough! I have two with frostbite now, but it's not bad. This is the second time with frostbite. Good ole Indiana weather! My ducks will be happy this weekend getting a bath!
