Frostbite

I plan on having the cord run through pvc into a closed bucket with a power strip. I have 4-5 things to run on that side alone. I've made my own electric cord protectors, so they can't get to them either.

I was never putting a heat lamp in with them--just straw.

A GFI will shut off instantly if something fails.

My runner ducks survived a truly frigid Iowa winter with no frostbite. Their pool was frozen over, but they sometimes still bathed in their heated dog watering dish with no ill effects. Maybe I was just lucky last winter, but I'm crossing my fingers again this year.

I do layer straw on in the bottom of their run, although they never seem to mind the cold. It makes me feel much better!
