Good evening.

I have a small flock of Toulouse geese.

They have free run of a 10 acre fenced area. They have the ability to leave their housing 24/7.

Unfortunately a 2 year old goose hung up on a fence for up to 12 hours with her leg above her body. Lot of collected droppings. Temps -6 degrees. Foot was frozen solid. I found her Monday morning. Got her foot heated up gradually. The joint above foot doesn’t seem injured.

She is pretty active. Standing on the the good foot and then falling over to sit back down. She has tried to put weight on the injured foot but hasn’t been successful. She is flapping her wings and stretching. She is also bathing with the water basin I have set up, using her head to throw water on body. She is eating and drinking.

The foot is swollen. There is warmth in the toes to my touch. Their are areas with more “scabbing”. She sits with it back and up. She doesn’t protest me touching it more than me otherwise moving her body.

What can I do? Should it be wrapped? What is the likely outcome?

:welcome sorry for the circumstances. With chickens such an injury would result in the foot 'dying', drying up and eventually being amputated or falling off. Hopefully this will not happen to her as a one legged goose would have problems moving around because of their size. If it only 'dies' up to the ankle joint she might be able to get around well enough to have quality of life.

I’ve definitely had my fair share of chicken frostbite over the years. These are my first geese. Only 2nd need for doctoring in 2 years. The other issue was a simple wing injury. The geese seem a lot more durable and robust.

New pic. Partial weight bearing. She hissed pretty loud when she set it down. She lasted about 45 seconds before lifting it full back up. The light colored smears are dropping she dragged it through.

No significant changes. Minor frostbite is healing. But foot still has lots of discoloring and the webbing is mostly cold to the touch. Swelling may be down.

She is bored. She likes to start honking away at 3am.

She is standing more and more. She. Can move freely, but stays in a smallish area. She is definitely lonely and wants to be out with the crew.

Most recent foot pic attached.

Temps will be above freezing for 2 days and then back to around 0 for a week. With some snow.

At what point will I know if the foot will be ok or the necrotic parts will fall be more clear? Thinking of building a boxed in area in their coop outside. But don’t want to impact healing.

Does she have any mobility or feeling in her toes?
