Frozen Bell Waterer

The girls have a heated dog water bowl in the coop. They hate it. For some reason they prefer the bell waterer, maybe because the bowl fills up with shavings too fast. Any ideas how to keep their 'chook waterer' from freezing?

Fill the heated dog bowl with sand and set the bell waterer on top of it. Then you'll have a heated base to keep the water unfrozen, and the birds will be drinking from something they like. Also, keep the water fount level up to the chicken's back high. Then they won't kick so much shavings into the water.
