Frozen hen

This hen was only 3. My in-laws are in Chaparral. They said it is snowy, cold and the wind is howling. About like it is here but she said y'all had more snow. Its almost noon here and it's only 10 degrees. Crazy. Last week it was 60 and beautiful. Spent half the days on horseback relaxing.

Sorry terri... and writer... that you both lost chickens. I have such a vision of NM being a hot desert, that it's hard to imagine it getting that cold. Brrr
Imp- stay warm

As for the mites/lice I heard because they swarm the body when its there that the outside temp does not matter- they wait till they are warm enough to move and that means dinner.

not sure about this .

How do you know if your chickens have mites and lice? What do mites and lice look like?

That is sad but I think Ridgerunner is on to something. Here in Maine it has gotten down to -15 without the windchill and about -30 or so with it and it has gotten down to 5 degrees in my coop. I have 5 RIR and they seem to enjoy the cold. If she was exposed to even a slight draft, that could do it, but I am surprised she didn't move if she was cold.

As for the mite thing, is that something that DE shaked out in the nesting box can take care of?
