So far, no apparent problems, but my beloved noticed last week that the frozen peas we use as treats have added salt. (Yikes!

Anyone know the amount of sodium ducks can tolerate, per pound of duck? Indeed, the ducks love frozen peas for treats. And to thaw them, I rinse them with several changes of warm water.

We found one very pricey brand without salt.

I give them peas about five times a week - ten runners get ten to fifteen ounces of peas (that's one to one and a half ounces per duck).

They also eat Blue Seal pellets, a little cat kibble, and some rolled oats. They browse the garden for greens and creepy-crawlies.

Very interesting discovery. Had to check the freezer to see if mine had it added to. They usually add salt to vegetables to control the grows of mold or fungus spores. Anyway. I did check the Walmart Great Value brand of peas and it does not has salt added. There is naturally sodium in peas, but again it does not have any added to the peas. I don't think you need to worry to much, if you rinse them well. Plus cat kibble has a lot of salt added. I guess it is ok because they consume tons of water with their food. Plus duck can live in sea water where they consume lots of salt, but they still need regular water to handle the sea water. So overall, I would not worry to much.

My "Great Value" peas from Wal Mart does not have any added salt in it. So, if you are concerned about added salt, you can probably use that. That's what I feed to the lake ducks sometimes.

Yeap, be sure to check the no-name brands.

So far, the ones i have seen don't have salt added.

My ducks didn't seem to care for them, though.

Our local grocery store (regional chain store) carries one brand without salt, and it's pricey - one of those microwave bags.

I will need to find another grocery store for peas, I reckon. Sheesh.

When you read the bag, how do you know if salt is added or if it's the natural sodium they're talking about?

It's listed under Ingredients on the back of the package.

Generally when you buy a bag of frozen peas, you will see this:

Ingredients: Peas
or
Ingredients: Frozen Peas

If you see Ingredients: Peas, salt

then you know it has salt added other than what may naturally occur in it.
