Frozen water drinkers - how to stop it freezing

Sounds like a low watt light bulb underneath or make the cookie tin heater. The electric cord can be encased in a plastic wiring harness used to consolidate wires running along a same pathway...or take a long spring (like used to pull an open door shut) and put the exposed electric cord inside that. It just takes a few minutes to do that and the chickens cannot peck through it to the cord. Good luck.

I didn't mean their house. I meant I bring the waterer inside my house overnight, so that it doesn't freeze up solid and so that I can refill it with warm tap water in the morning.

Imp beat me to the link on that other post for ice free water. Looked good. Was just thinking that one could also use a regular heating pad if push comes to shove. Not the cheapest but set it on a board and the waterer on top of that...set it to the low setting, maybe medium in worst case scenario, and walk away. If one has that unused and lying around it should work. My brother up high in the mountains, leaves one on the floor set on low. The chickens go over to it and warm their feet..I know, a completely different application.

Cookie tin heaters will work with plastic waterers. I use a 40 watt bulb and have had no problems. Temps inside the coop have been in the single digits lately and no ice. My problem has been keeping the waterer on top of the tin. I put a small cookie sheet (baking sheet) on top of the cookie tin and screwed it to the wall. The waterer now sits on the sheet and the hens don't tip it over any more.

Thanks B'villechicken.

I was trying to find an answer to that question w/o luck.

Imp- raining here, and I'm headed out to clean the coop

You can get just about anything on the internet.

Ebay has plenty of "Heated Pet Bowls" with shipping to UK. These work awesome outside, maybe a bit messy inside depending on size of coop and number of birds.

I Realize you need a quick fix though, If I didn't already have the "Little Giant" heated base, I would make the cookie tin set-up.

If you think the bulb is too hot so as to melt the plastic start with the lower power bulb and work up. Also you can start with the high powered bulb and set the plastic waterer on top of a ceramic floor tile or into a glass pie dish.

Thanks for that have passed the info to hubbie and going to get him to make a cookie tin heater. Also the link about the fish tank heater is also an option. Will look on ebay later for some heater bowls also.

Someone had posted on the local classifieds about using a kerosene lantern to put under the waterer. I sent them an email to see if I could get more specifics, but haven't heard back just yet.
