Howdy! I've searched the threads for this topic and can't seem to find anything. I have 4 Pekin ducks that are 2 months old and have been outside in their coop/run for over a month now. They'll eat out of our hand but are extremely skittish even though we showered them with attention while they were small. They'd never be still long enough for us to pet them. However, yesterday while i was hand feeding them we had a Mississippi Kite fly in and perch in the tree above and when they noticed it they froze. I'd never seen anything like it. They wouldn't move a muscle for more than a few minute. I reached out and pet every one of them. I ruffled their breast feathers. I stood up thinking they would take off as usual but they stood there with head tilted, eyes on the kite. I even stood in their view of the kite...still as statues. I kinda enjoyed the petting I was able to get in but the poor babies were just terrified! Then last right as the sun was going down they jumped in their pool for the last swim of the night and a brown thrasher landed on the fence and started chirping and they froze again! I didn't approach them this time...just stood back and observed. Why in the world are the scared of a brown thrasher?? Its just an average small bird! They kind of reminded me of the fainting goats..minus the falling down..lol. Anyway...are my ducks just big sissy-la-La's or is this fairly normal?

Mine watch planes as well. They're so darn cute when they all cock their head to the side and watch it fly by. We live right in the flight path of our small little airport so they see planes quite often but they've never froze up over a plane or any of the other birds. Wish I could master a bird call that would freeze them so I could pick them up when I need to...lol

Daphne hunkers down, freezes, and does a truly fantastic impression of a rock/clump of dirt whenever there is a predatory bird of any sort in the area, even if it is flying so high that I can barely see it (and sometimes I can’t).

Meanwhile, my pure white Muscovy looks up and then continues on with life as usual. She sticks out like a sore thumb (except in winter). They only free-range under close supervision, but I know who would get eaten first if an attack happened. :he
