Frustrated with Ebay

Other than gross negligence by the post office, I've had pretty good luck buying hatching eggs off eBay. I do, however, specify that I want the eggs individually wrapped in bubble wrap (ends open) and placed directly into the shipping box.

I've also sold turkey and chicken eggs thru eBay. Nearly 100% arrive intact if wrap as above.

The biggest problem for me is buyers who don't know what they're doing having a bad hatch and wanting their money back or a new set of eggs. The second biggest problem is eBay itself. Here are some things you may not know:

1. Sellers can no longer leave negative feedback for buyers. You can report a "non-payer" to eBay, but you have to wait 10 days to do it. So I'm being stiffed a lot more by buyers.

2. eBay listing and selling fees have gone through the roof. That's why some sellers charge inflated shipping fees; eBay doesn't take a portion of the shipping.

I'm not sure how Craigslist is much better, except that you don't have the fees. The same goofy people are buying and selling there, and many are downright crooks.

I sell most of my eggs on Ebay, so everyone there is not a gangster.

If you sell under geareduplyn I would recognize that name and be inclined to trust you - even though I've never met you, I've seen you on forums etc.

Some people get well known or are recognizable. Those I would consider buying from, if they had something I wanted. I've seen good breeders that I recognize sell on eggbid, for example, and but a lot of people who seem to be untraceable.

The thing that really burns me up is when people take pics from awesome breeders and present the birds/eggs as theirs. By stealing pics, they are implying so much - what kind of genetics are in the birds, what kind of breeding program they have, what condition they keep the birds in, how they house them.... a newbie might look at those pics and not even think that the birds don't belong to the person who posts the pictures of them.

Does anyone out there want to help a very very excited newbie to this chicken thing..I've had 3 hens and 1 rooster for almost a year and love them..Rhode Island Reds I believe..? I don't know how to post photos or do much else on this site except read..read..read to learn as much as I can. My Husband and I and 2 girls want to incubate our own eggs-I have a friend trying to incubate mine-they've all been bad so far-yet all her eggs have hatched! SO sad for us. I would like to purchase eggs from someone on this site-What we are looking for is someone who can sell us 2 dozen mixed eggs-very mixed-we just want a bunch a different looking chickens-were looking for brown eggs layers-gentle ones-We would also like advice on the best incubator out there that won't break our accounts :) Our chickens have yet to brood-we've let them try multiple times-we live in the Adirondacks-New York and it's 20 degrees today-50 by Friday though!..We are building a huge awesome coop this spring!!! Help please???? How much $ are we talking for eggs and such?

I run a full time business on ebay... And usually as I have seen it Ebay tends to be more for the Customer and always gives them the benefit of the doubt while slamming the seller. It is strange you didn't get more help!

{I buy alot of stuff from ebay, but not eggs. I also sell a few things here and there. One thing I look for is someone with a positive rating above 99%. Twice I decided to go with someone at 98% because the deal was that good and I got burned. Now, I will even pay a bit more for someone that has 100% over someone with a 99%. } (so I messed up the quote thing.. oops)

I know it is a bit off subject, but I have a 98% feedback on ebay because I had 2 customers that crooked thier too nice of a seller. They were completely unhappy with thier items and I gave them a full refund and let them keep the item for the trouble, I don't like un happy customers, and they left me negative anyway. You can't always blame sellers, when there are customers that are crooks as well!

i sell on Ebay when I need to clean house and never knew animals were for sale on there either.. we almost bought eggs throught there ! Thanks everyone for the good advice and sad stories sorry!!

I got some of my best white runners off of Ebay. In fact, her fertility rate was 100%. I have already placed my private order with her this year. And I have purchased some white calls that turned out to be very nice off of there, too. So not all Ebayers are bad.

I just sold my first eggs on Ebay - we'll see how that goes.

OTOH - I got like 15 snowy call eggs last year and not a single one was fertile. What a waste of money. But you know, eggs are cheap compared to some of the birds I want, so it is a risk I take to get stock. I could get on holderread's waiting list and have what I want in a year, or pay $500 for adult birds - or I can buy eggs for a fraction of the price and take my chances. It really depends on what you are looking for.

You have to go with your gut I think - if it sounds iffy - it probably is.

I myself just had a horrible experience with a ebay egg seller as well. I bought 6 D Uccle eggs for a HUGE sum of money because of the rare type. I got the eggs and they looked like the belonged to a Robin or Cardinal, they were that small!!! Not only were they obviously the very first pullet eggs but to make matters worse none of them were fertile! I put them in the bator, waited 10 days, no development, so I opened them and NO Bullseye! I contacted the seller and they stated no refunds and would send me 3 more eggs for $20 more! WTH!!!! You want me to waste $20 more dollars on NON FERTILE eggs when I already sent you $58 for the 6 you already took me on? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!?
I filed a paypal dispute. They closed it saying they did not get involved in matters of item quality! I am so steamed!!!
If you'd like to know who the seller was you can PM me and I'll be glad to enlighten you so you don't fall victom to there unscrupulous business tactics.

No one needs to be ripped off by buying on Ebay. On each listing there is place to ask the seller a question. I learned to do so. With a few judicious questions you can pretty much deterimine if the seller knows what they are selling or got some eggs somewhere else 8 months ago and assumes they can also make some bucks by peddling some eggs their pullets just started laying. In the case of Standard bred poultry the most pertinent question to ask is how close the sellers birds are to the breed standards. If they reply with "what are you talking about" don't buy. Ask a lot of questions. If the seller seems knowledgeable and their feed back is good I will buy.

In my case, I asked alot of questions and the persons feedback was good. So that isn't always a good policy either. More so as you can no longer leave negative feedback for a seller anyway. Of course their feedback will be good! I hate ebay!!!! If someone is a bad seller then they should have acurate feedback to match so others will not be duped!
