$800 was actually a pretty good offer for you. I realize that you paid quite a bit more but that was over a year ago and the price has dropped a lot on it ever since the 50D came out.
Ummm, no, August 2008 was NOT over a year ago. It was actually only 8 1/2 months ago.
To the OP, if you can come up with the money some other way, I would do that, if I were you. If photogaphy is a big part of your life, and you really enjoy it, you will probably want another camera again one day (or wish you still had this one). You will have to get another one for alot more than what you will receive when selling this one, even at $1000.
Is there any way you can use the camera to make some extra money? Anyone in the neighborhood want pics of their kids, animals, etc? Father's day is coming up. Pics of kids are great gifts. You would still have time to take and process the pics. Plus, you are getting experience, and some money too. You can also offer to take pics for people of items they want to sell, maybe on craigslist. Lots of people don't have a good camera, believe it or not. Or, maybe if someone wants pics of valuables taken, for insurance purposes, you can take them (don't forget to take pics of the serial numbers too) and put them all on a cd or two for somone. None of this will make lots of money, but maybe it will jumpstart some ideas. And, some money is better than none. Just some thoughts...
I understand whee you are coming from. We bought a Canon Rebel Xsi back the end of summer last year, less than a year ago. My husband really, really enjoys it and uses it alot. We have bought extra stuff for it; lenses, filters, a nice bag, sd cards, etc. I would have a hard time selling IT for $1000 and it isn't as nice as the one you have.
Just my opinion. Good luck, whatever you decide to do!
