The reusable hand warmers someone mentioned that they were going to try to use in a recent thread were these ones......seems like they work via magic.

That reminds me, somewhere I have a microwaveable stadium seat cushion. Same basic idea. But if I use it for chickens, I might be cursing myself, the next time I have to sit on metal bleachers while watching the kids play soccer in November.

I've heard that microwaving rice in a sock or something similar accomplishes the same thing.

Or ... just heat a couple of bricks in your oven, and put out under the waterer on the cold days ...
I love this idea. We always have a few wood stoves running in this house, and could easily keep a few bricks on them, to take out each morning with the water. If placed in a somewhat-insulated box, with a galvanized waterer on top (a plastic one might melt!), they'd likely do a fantastic job.

Another idea I had was to just simply wrap my regular 2-gallon hanging plastic waterers with adhesive-backed noeprene foam, and then fill them with hot water. The water in the tray will always be cool enough for the chickens, but it might keep the load in the upper part of the waterer warm enough to last the day without freezing.
