Hi Everyone,
I had a chicken that was attacked by a fox which I discovered much later (I was out of town) it had attacked her above the vent. The only way I even noticed the attack was she had a lot of runny stool attached to her feathers and I decided it needed to be cleaned. I cleaned her up everyday by this time there was some dead skin and two maggots which I took care of and packed her with antiseptic gel that was also a fly barrier. She actually seemed to be doing okay, eating, drinking and her crown was bright red, eyes alert. I then put her back in with the other chickens and they proceeded to attack her. They pecked one eye, so I removed her and she seemed to go down hill. She would not eat, lying around for hours....Finally she ate about a day later corn from the cob and sunflower seeds. She walked that evening to her separate coop, drank water along the way. She died the next day at 8am with a crop so full of corn and sunflower seed, I could not believe it.There was no foul smell when I cut the crop open, the food looked as fresh as when she ate it 15 hours earlier.
I do believe there was other issues with her. But I don't fully understand the crop issue. There seemed to be no grass impaction, hay or straw, they are free range, but have access to their feed as well as fresh dirt for grit, berries etc, oyster shell. She did just sit for hours very still....at first I thought it was the eye, the eye did finally open and appear in tact. She still would lye quietly for most of the day, rising roughly 5 hours later to eat and drink.
How long does food remain in the crop on average?
Thanks to all.
