Undertook a fun little project today! I had a spare 16” trough feeder that I wasn’t using, as I had become annoyed with my chickens knocking it over. I decided to build a little frame to suspend it, with a cover to keep the feed safe from the elements. I mounted a 2x4 to the top, so that the chickens would have a safe surface to roost on if they chose to, and not cut their feet on the upper edge of the metal panels.

The trough will hang about 8 inches off the ground, so rodent shouldn’t be able to get in either!

The cool part is that I built the frame completely from scrap. Random bits lying around. The legs and general framing are from scrap 2x4. The metal roof panels are scrap pieces That were trimmed off from the roof of our coop. The only pieces I bought were the eyelet screws, chains, and S hooks used to suspend the trough. Total of around $7.

Just thought I’d share a fun idea I had for a small supplemental feeder, I know most of us have lots of scrap lumber lying around!

There are two of them right now that would suit:

As a person who prefers to have feed and water out in the run I like seeing various ideas of how to make field shelters for the feeder and waterer. :)

Thank you! I will likely do both! Should be a fun little project for me tonight!

And thank you again! I hadn’t seen much out there like this and thought it would be a fun idea to share. I also like the idea of having a variety of feeder and waterer options available, so each can pick their favorite! I also live in the PNW, and although my current climate is fairly arid, am super used to the moisture problems of the coastal side of the state! I’d always rather be safe than sorry, and not have to deal with moldy feeders!
