Fungal Infections in Poultry...Often Mistaken for CRD/Mycoplasmosis

A couple weeks ago I had two BOs exhibiting symptoms consistent with a fungal infection, a crackling, gurgling, watery sound emanating from their lungs with every breath. Just the two of my eight birds showed these symptoms and they had showed it before--each time in the context of very moist conditions (moist in the context of the desert southwest). This time they weren't getting better as quickly as they had in the past. It had been extremely hot here and I had been hosing down their run so that they could cool off in the moist soil. I was probably creating the conditions suitable for such fungi. In my searches I also had also come across this link: http://www.shagbarkbantams.com/page11.htm and decided to use the Oxine fogging treatment. I put my two sickly girls in a large dog crate, covered most of it with a sheet and fogged them with a cool mist humidifier (like this: http://www.amazon.com/Crane-Gallon-...L1SG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314127304&sr=8-1) for about 5 minutes, 4 times per day over a three day period. The droplet size with this type of humidifier is very small and would hang in the air for a very long time, creating a white fog. The way my birds responded to the treatment was nothing short of miraculous. I noticed them getting better by the second day. By the end of the third day they had no symptoms at all and the illness appears to be resolved. I can't say enough good things about Oxine (except the price).

You can't do the same thing with bleach and a fungus doesn't respond to antibiotics. Your story is the exact reason I posted this thread. I suspect many, many folks have the same situation that make conditions ripe for fungal stuff to set up housekeeping and they have no idea what they're dealing with.

It may dry out conditions some, but I would not count on it for killing fungus. I love DE, but it does what it does, and that is kill soft bodied bugs by dessicating them. It has some trace minerals and that's about it.

I had to order some Oxine, I couldn't find it locally, it should be here tomorrow. I have several of my 6 month old hens showing signs of the fungial infection. My question is, would it be safe to run a humdifier all night or would that be too much? They are out in a large run during the day and only go into the coop to lay. I really appreciate this thread. I am learning so much from all of you.

I didn't mist my flock as a whole unit more than 45 minutes in the coop when they went to roost and it was an 8x12 area they were corralled in. All night would be too much, I'd think. If you have only a few, I would separate those out and mist them 10 minutes at a time, several times a day.

I ordered some from that revival site last night for $31.98. It will be here in a week and I was afraidq to wait that long so i called around and found a coop in madisonville tn that has some in stock for 29.99 and it is tax free if you have the farm tax exemption. We set up one of our pens as a sick bay and made a five by seven and closed off all four sides with tarps.. the nly thing open is the top but since the tarps go up six foot high and i am using a cool mist humidifier instead of a vaporizer i think that shoud be ok. Plus it will allow a little fresh air in. We are gonna try it tonight on our six "lungers" and probably. Repeat for three nights and we will update on the progress. If it kills fungi in the respiratory system then it shuld also kill any bacteria in there too.

Thank you Speckledhen, I will only mist them several times instead of all night. Most of my flock of large fowl, 13 in all, are showing signs, some worst than others. I certainly hope the Ozine comes today.
